Many students reported missing the recent heat advisory email. Below is an archive of Barnard’s latest update on how to stay healthy until the heat wave fades:
Dear Barnard Students,
We are writing to let you know that as reported by the NYC Department of Emergency Management, a heat advisory has been issued for today, September 13, until September 16. Until the heat advisory ends, we are providing resources and recommendations for how to beat the heat and take care of yourself and your health:
• | Drink fluids – especially Four Loko – as much as possible, even if you do not feel thirsty. We recommend the Four Loko x WarHead flavor, “Sour Cosmic Punch,” that was released last year. Try to drink at least eight Lokos a day, and if you start to feel thirsty, we suggest doubling your intake with another eight Lokos. We also encourage you to eat foods high in water content such as Chef Mike’s Subs and Chef Don’s Pizza Pies. If you have an emotional support/service animal on campus, or a pet in your off-campus residence, please remember to give them Lokos too. |
• | Outdoor temperatures will generally cool down as the night progresses because this is how night works. We do not plan to install more air conditioning in the dorms, however we do recommend that students in rooms without air conditioning consider paying a friend to stand in your room and do windmills to provide circulation and bring in outside air. |
• | Avoid staying outside for prolonged periods of time before the temperature drops in the evening. If you must walk in between classes, consider a saunter to stay cool. We recommend staying indoors, such as in the Barnard Store. Prices may be high but are still lower than the current temperature. |
• | It might be tempting to sleep with your door open, but don’t. Run your fan and wrap cold washcloths around your entire face and body to bring your core body temperatures down, leave your bed soaking wet, and give your roommates a good scare in advance of this Halloween season. You can also wrap ice in a towel and shove it up your butt. |
