President-elect Donald Trump recently nominated U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz to be the next Attorney General in his cabinet. Gaetz was thrilled by the nod from Trump and is already making a list of action items to be completed if approved by the Senate. One notable plan is to establish a foundation in partnership with Columbia University. When asked what made this come to mind, Gaetz admitted he was inspired by former Attorney General Eric Holder’s foundation––the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights––which was launched at Columbia College in November 2017. Gaetz has since made public his intention to form the Matthew Louis Gaetz II Initiative for Civil and Minor Rights, noting a particular distinction: while Holder’s initiative is targeted towards current undergraduate students, Gaetz intends to partner with Columbia’s Pre-College Summer Program, stipulating that members must be in middle or high school, and must be 17 years or younger to qualify for the foundation. Gaetz told The Columbia Federalist he hopes the initiative will allow him to create a lasting legacy, although this may be difficult given that he is legally forbidden from being within 100 feet of the program.
